This project is a finalist of A! Diseño 2022.
On this occasion, we had a very difficult task: to redesign a very famous Mexican Ice cream shop: La Michoacana.
This was a very challenging assignment since we had to reimagine a business that´s very established in this country and it was hard to picture it with another brand identity. This said; the OG design was screaming for help! We did this redesign a couple of semesters ago, but I´m still proud of what Paloma Niembro, Paola Guajardo and I did.
There were a lot of problems with the original design… but it´s tradition.
Things like, the organization of the popsicles, the cramped shops and the bad use of space, the “thing” with the pricing, and many more.
We started to develop solutions to all of the problems mentioned, while still trying to communicate the three more important things the shop is trying to sell: fun, fresh fruit, and range.
We designed a small but effective popsicle stand, to fit within the dimension of one of the smallest shops La Michoacana has, so that the product looks more appetizing, and not just thrown on a pile as they do it nowadays.
We also gave the whole shop a remodel, since the way they were storing things and displaying cups and products in general, was making it less fresh-looking, and actually kind of dirty and hard to clean.
We also gave the whole design a rejuvenation, to appeal more to younger audiences, and be social media friendly.
One of the most important things for this shop is the tradition that revolves around it. This Ice cream has been sold all over Mexico for many years, and one of the things that people look forward to when visiting it is talking with the staff. It´s a running joke, that the walls of the Michoacana shops have written all over them hundreds of flavors, but you still have to ask the person that´s on the counter, which flavors they have available since it´s most likely they don´t match the ones on the walls. This gave us an idea, not to go against tradition, but to embrace it, and create a new menu, where the only pricing you see is attached to the size of the popsicle you can get, but you are forced to ask what flavors you can choose from.
Because it was one of the first designs we did that involved the creation of a brand book, it sure came with its challenges, but I´m very proud of what we accomplished.
